It started out overcast but I decided to go anyway.I took the Buffalo Classic 45/70,scout scoped 91/30 and short Turkish Mauser.
In the 45/70 I wanted to try some 350Gr. round nose that I had loaded.I usually shoot 350Gr. hollow points.I was satisfied to see that the 350 shot to the same point of aim and impact as the 300.They were just as consistent to point of impact as the 300.This will be a good hunting load.I'll still use the 300 as target loads since they are much less expensive.
I was curious as to something I had read concerning the NCStar scope which is the scope on the 91/30.Several people had posted on other forums that the scope didn't hold zero from range trip to range trip.I found this not to be true.It was just as terifically accurate as it was last time.I did find that the Albanian 7.62X54R ammunition is more accurate than the Polish. Some of this Albanian has funky thick rims making for hard bolt closing but it is really good stuff. This rifle is just fun to shoot and almost boringly accurate.
The short Turk was good with Turk milsurp ammunition and I wanted to see how it did with the reloaded stuff I had made. The Turk ammo is 146Gr. and I pulled a dozen of them and replaced the bullet with a 150 Gr. soft point hunting round using the same load of Turk powder which I found averaged 47Gr.If you ever pull down any Turk ammo you will find that the case is slap full.Mainly this was to test the round for consistency for use in another rifle.
It did good as far as function and I think this will be a good hunting load.Actually I probably won't ever use a Mauser for deer hunting but did want to have some proven loads for same.
Being this close to the opening of muzzle loader deer season here in South Carolina the range was completely trashed and there were a lot of people coming and going.
Met some good people today.I'd give the day an 8 rating.
