As you fellas may remember, I had the Springfield in camp last year, and had forgotten that the front sight was still painted white from target shooting. When I aimed at the mane of a nice Bull Caribou, it disappeared into the white hair and the hunt was over. Determined to have success with it this year, I blackened the front blade and kept practicing with that little peep sight. My report:
A nice Bull was wandering down the gravel bar, and it looked like the perfect chance for the 03. I settled in prone, flipped up the rear sight, and checked that it was set properly. Bang went the shot. The Bull staggered as if lung shot, and ran off. This is what I found on the gravel bar:
Having not mastered the peep sight except for Target shooting, I am going back to the drawing board, and explore other options, like maybe a taller front sight in conjunction with the notched rear sight. The problem I am having is keeping the game in focus thru that small aperture.
