Got to take a rare morning off, and my son and I spent some time at the range..... FINALLY....

I was able to shoot my m38 and 91/30 for the first time....... WmRoy LIKE!!!

Since it was pretty overcast and light was poor (not to mention my eyes are old and weak..... I just set up at 50 yards)......

The m38 was the first one I fired and I have to say I took a quick liking to the ugly little gal............ she shoots about 4 inches to the left, but at 50 yards she was grouping very well...... for me anyways.......... used Brown Bear FMJ and it fired very well for me in both guns. After about 10 rounds I could see she was in need of a front sight adjustment and I decided to put her away...... but I also decided to look for some hunting ammo for her...... OHH..... and what was really cool was that since it was an overcast and gloomy morning she was shooting some truly stunning flames out of the barrel!! I had the steyr m95 along too and I didn't notice any flames from her.... but that little m38 was a fire breather!

Next I pulled out the 91/30 and I tell ya I fell in love with that tall ugly stick for sure!! First two rounds were 4 inches high and about 2.5 inches to the left but overlapping by a good 1/3..... so much so that I had to walk up to look at the target cause I couldn't find my second shot with my scoped k98 sporter (we forgot the spotting scope) I finished off the box of ammo (8 rounds) and I had a nice 2 x 2.25 inch group right in the bullseye...... I used about a 4 o'clock hold to pull that off.....

All in all I hate to admit it but I really fell for these ugly girls....... especially that 91/30 with a scope she could be a scary one!!

I also took along my sporterized k98, my m1893 Spanish Mauser, and my m95 Steyr....... all in all I had a great time.

My son as always shot his .243 for a while and then proceeded to blast several milk jugs to bits with his Ruger 10/22. He's at that age were it's more fun to just blast than try and place your shots.

I'll post about the rest of the guns in the 'shootin the breeze'......

God Bless!:grinning-thumbsup:

just remember to have him practice the proper hold, stance, breath control and so on...kind of hard to untrain yourself later, and it keeps coming back.
i was like your boy, pop pop pop, later when i got into target shooting i had a heck of a time getting over the old habbit. then later when shooting game it would pop back in there...now i have to make sure i am doing it right.
just some thoughts.

I know what ya mean....... I was working with him on that but he can be bull headed....... where'd he get that trait from............. :dontknow: ;)

I'm thinking about taking a couple days next summer to take him on a trip to visit my Cousin in Montana. She and her husband (she has several national championships under her belt) are long time competitive shooters and I'd like them to spend a couple days working with him (of course I would love some tips me self.... :xxrotflmao: ). When he slows down and concentrates he is a dang good shot........... but it's more fun to blast............... :BangHead: :xxrotflmao: :BangHead:

If you ever get a M44 (that's the one with the side folding bayonet), remember for best accuracy, extend the bayonet. Supposedly they sighted them in with the bayonet extended. If you leave it in the folded position your accuracy will suffer.

I tried it and although I'm blind in one eye and can't see out the other, I seemed to have better groups with the bayonet extended. So, maybe it's true.

I heard the same thing. I've tried shooting m44's both ways. If nothing else the short little stubby carbines seem to be better balanced with the bayonet extended.

My thoughts are that the Nagant series of rifles are probably one of the most under-rated rifles ever made. Cheaply made? Yes. Crudely made? Yes. Ugly as hell? Yes. My favorites are the old Russian & Finn m91's. My favorite Finn in my personal collection is an old m39 I got years ago. I don't shoot her much anymore though.

I took my 44's bayonet off. Had to to make it fit in the ATI stock. I havent noticed any change in accuracy by not having it on. Ammunition makes the bigger difference for accuracy, but the ATI stock gave the gun a floating barrel that I quite like.

They may look a little bit more...say, not-as-pretty as some other rifles, but I wouldn't say they are ugly. :dontknow: :p :D

Now the Finn Mosin Nagants such as the M39 are much better looking though.

I sure like them....My only Russian is a nice post-war M91/59 carbine. Other than that it's Finn's Forever :grinning-thumbsup:

I have a 91/59 with scout scope,a scout scoped 91/30 and an M39 and all of them shoot great.I've gone thru a bunch of them finding ones that shot accurately. They are great rifles.
WmRoy,Find sone Barnaul 203Grain soft points and get them sighted in and take that deer hunting next year.
Look at the scout scope mounts made by Makarov.com.No gunsmithing and rock steady.

Thanks for the advice.......... ;) :grinning-thumbsup:

How do those mounts compare to the Darrell's Mounts?

I know Darrell personally and I don't want to seem like I am knocking his mounts. They are great on the carbines but the Makarov mount is better on a 91/59 or 91/30.I also made my own scout scope mount on the 91/30 from an extra rear Mosin sight. Not hard to do.Which rifle are you going to scope? If carbine...use a Darrell. If 91/30...use Makarov.Or....make your own.Need help?Let me know.

Well, I'd probably scope the 91/30 first........ but likely end up with them both scoped........... ;)

I'll go check out the Makarov site.............

Thanks Again!!! :D
