Last Wedsneday I was off (still trying to figure that one out). So I talked to Stan and Fred to see what they were doing. Naturally Ol' Fella was off (retirement is good he tells me). Fred said he needed to get out and kill something.

Public land is closed for hunting in South Carolina until the the tenth so they invited me to hunt on their lease. It is good to have connections :grinning-thumbsup:! A hunting we will go?

Fred is a member of the Greenville Gun Club He invited us to go check it out and zero our rifles. So we met at Fred's house and drove there. To sum it up in one word? Nice! We had a good time. I shot my 8mm sporterized carbine. She was shooting just a inch or so high at one hundred yards and the shot groups were a little over an inch apart. Nothing to write home about, but like Fred says: "Good enough to put meat on the table."

Fred brought his sporterized O3A3 which has been a 6mm for twenty or more years. This is the part that kills me. He took one shot at his business card at one hundred yards. His business card has a small silhouette of a bulls eye superimposed on it. His first bullet was maybe an inch high. At this point he says: "I'm done."

Ol' Fella brought his scoped .223 NEF with him. For whatever reason, that one just couldn not get dialed in. We were there maybe an hour or so and there was only one other shooter there. When he finished shooting he came over and said something to the effect of: "I have an 8mm just like that..." Not hardly mi compadre! :cool-smiley-1:

We left after an hour or so and headed out to the private lease. We figured that between the three of us on private land that one of us should at least see a deer. As the sun went down I did not hear any shots. Neither did they. We all walked out and closed the gate. :o

While none of us saw a deer we still had a good hunt. Part of the hunt is coming home empty handed. Today was just such a day. But I would not trade it in for anything in the world.
