Normally the "default" setting on most routers that support wireless connections is to have security turned off. If you live way out in the country with no neighbors really close by, it may not really be a concern.
However, if you live in an apartment and/or in the city and have neighbors right next door, you will probably want to enable the security settings on your router so that all wireless connections have to use WEP Encryption to access your router. You normally want to choose 128bit encryption which will thwart all but the most devout hackers.
Most routers also allow you to use the MAC address on your any wireless connections that way it's pretty much hack proof as it's based on the unique MAC address of your notebook (no other notebook should have the same MAC address).
In both cases, you go into the setup for your router, configure the security the way you want it, then you go configure the wireless network adapter to match those settings and you'll then have a secured wireless network.
If set-up a bunch of these and their all very similar. Let me know the EXACT model number of your wireless modem/router and I'll see if I can find an online tutorial for you and/or if necessary, walk you through it over the phone.

Not sure what the "CGblahblah" is........but that's not a Netgear model number, at least not one I ever heard of. The WG111v2 sounds like a legit model number, but not sure if that's a router or modem/router. I'll have to look this stuff up and get back to you.
I just got in from work and I've not had lunch or dinner, so I'm starving. I'll check back in later. If necessary, I may have to give you a call, just to be sure we're on the same page, but I'll let ya know.

Ok....just did some checking.........WG111v2 is the model number of your USB Wireless Network Adapter. CG814WG is in fact the model number of your Netgear Wireless Router/Gateway. The reason that it didn't ring a bell is that it's brand new. It's so new it's not even listed on Netgear's own website where all their product info is available.
There is however a Press Release telling about it being newly certified and that it will soon be distributed. Unfortunately there is no online tutorial that I can give you a link for that could walk you through it. And without my being able to "see" the screen shots by viewing a "pdf", I'm not sure that I could walk you through it on the phone.
The good thing is that this and almost all Netgear routers use NAT which makes it a bit tougher for someone on the web to gain access to your computers as they are shielded by the translation. However, a close neighbor could still "piggy back" onto your connection.
There are a lot of variables on how far someone might be from you home and still get a wireless connection (we ARE talking about radio signals here). Once they do grab the connection, they become a part of your local area network, which is like having an uninvited neighbor in your home.
So, if your manual has a decent explanation about how to enable encryption, you may want to take a stab at it yourself. You should choose either 128bit WEP encryption or the option for MAC addressing. You'll need to get the MAC address for your USB Wireless Network Adapter (WG111) and any other wireless network adapters that are being used and enter them into the set-up for using MAC addressing as your security method.
It's the most secure and is preferred if you're paranoid about some 13yrd old genius in the neighborhood who has a vendetta against you for running him out of your yard last summer.

have one of the kiddos see how far out into the yard or road they can go before their conection gives out...that will tell you a little about how far it goes...then you have to be paranoid about microwave horns on your neighbors roofs pointed your way.
