From the collection...New Model, 1908 Type, Krieghoff "P" Code Commercial.
This Luger variation was born of the 1934 German Luftwaffe contract with the Heinrich Krieghoff Waffenfabrik firm. The contract was for 10,000 pistols and more parts sets were manufactured than called for. Most likely with the anticipation and/or advanced planning that some pistols would fail to meet Luftwaffe specifications.
That said, there were apprx. 3,580 component sets left over and of these Krieghoff produced apprx. 1,500 Lugers to be sold commercially. From this group of commercial pistols apprx. 1,000 were marked on the left frame in three lines, "Heinrich Krieghoff, Waffenfabrik, Suhl". Of the remaining 500 pistols, the frame was not marked.
This group of pistols were serial numbered with the letter P as a prefix to the number.
Krieghoff Lugers are of the highest quality and it is reported that the firm had a failure to meet specfications rate of less than 10% compared to the DWM and Mauser rate of 25% to 30%. Not that this was a bad thing, usually pertaining to headspacing which could be corrected later.
