I went to a gun show today.I was only going to buy some reloading supplies and see some of my friends.I happened on an individual walking the aisles with a Marlin 1895 in 45/70.I stopped and talked to him for a few and looked at the gun and asked his price. It was a good price but not quite good enough.Twice more in walking the show I ran into this guy and finally came to a traffic jam in one of the aisles and came face to face with him again. He and I got to talking and we both reckoned that I was destined to buy that rifle so we stepped aside and did some haggling and I walked away with it.
It's a Marlin Model 1895SS in blue steel with a 3x10x44 scope in see thru mounts. The gun is like new and I am very pleased with it.
The first thing I did when I got home was to take that wayyy too big scope off.I'm still trying to decide on whether or not to even leave a scope on it.If I do it will be a much smaller one like a 2X7X32 which is much better suited to the big bore.
Range report to follow on next range day.
I guess I'll have to take it with me the next time I go visit my sister in Alabama so I can get the LoLo stamp of approval on it.
I'm getting eaten up with 45/70's.This is my third one.

I just wasn't happy with the sight picture I was seeing on the folding rear sight I put on the Marlin 45/70 so the other day I went over to Fred the Gunsmith's and plundered thru his rear sights and came across a buckhorn style just like what originallY came on the rifle. When I got it put on it looked much much better as far as sight picture.Much easier acquisition of the target and easier to see the target.
Today I took it to the range.Tried a 25 yard shot and it hit the 2" bull.I had the sight on lowest elevation. My next shot was at 100 yards and was 6" below the bull.I moved the sight up one notch and the third shot was right edge of the 2" red bull at 100 yards with the fourth shot right on the left edge.I then picked out a clay pigeon on the berm at 100 yards and shattered it.Five shots and I put the rifle back in the case.It is ready for deer and hog.

I'm trying to help a nice woman find out more about a gun that she has had passed down to her. I figured that I'll post it here because it is a 45/70. She was offer $1,000 for it and turned it down. Her great uncle owned it and his first inital and name H. True is engraved into the barrel. I believe he is the great uncle or great great uncle of Rachel True. She is a local who turned actress and has done a few popular movies. I hope the pics load ok. I'm not sure about the make, just that its a 45/70 with an unusual barrel and its very heavy. I told her that she should go and get it checked out for condition and see what the potential value is of it. Well I'll shut up now and let the pics do the talking. Swizzle

The only thing I can offer is that it appears to be a custom made rifle based upon a Springfield trap door action.I've never seen a barrel configured like that but it evidently aids in cooling with all of that surface area plus the spaces to stow cleaning rods on each side is really neat.

Do you think she made a bad decion to turn down a $1,000 for it? I'll probably see her this weekend and I want to tell her a little bit about it. Thanx, Jason
