Today was a load testing day with my NEF Handi rifle in 45/70.I received some cast bullets in the mail from a buddy in Oklahoma about a week ago and naturally had to load them and see how they shot.He had sent me about a dozen each of four bullet weights. These weights per my scale were 385Gr.,407Gr.,420 Gr. and 465Gr.I loaded 35 Grains of REL7 for each weight and for testing only loaded 6 of each.My usual pet load for which the Handi is sighted is a 300 Gr. JHP over 40 Gr. of REL7.
First order of business was a 3 shot group using the normal load. Then I shot three of each of the cast loads using the same point of aim.The heavier bullets all shot higher and to the right.I'm not a recoil shy type but the 465 Gr. load was really tops in the recoil department.A full day of shooting just that load would be hard.
I also took to the range my old .22 pistol which I hadn't shot in 2 or 3 years. It is a 9 shot revolver with 4 inch barrel. After shooting a target at 25 yards I decided to see how it would do at 100 yards.I was surprised how close I was coming to a clay pigeon on the berm.Actually I was all around it but at least I was close.

Sounds like a great day! We got out today; the son and daughters boyfriend are going to Moose hunt this fall with 300 Win Mags. The boyfriend had bought a Savage 111 that needed sighting in, and we wanted to make sure my 300 was still on. Made up some loads, 4350, 68 grs. behind a 165 gr. Speer. They struggled getting used to the recoil, but were getting better with both rifles. I couldn't resist, pulled out my M39, and shot a group about half the size of theirs with open sights.OOOPS!
