Some of you guys know that my son is a violinist. He's 14 and a freshman in high school. Well he was given a chance tonight to audition to become a member of the local colleges orchestra, and he GOT IN! He looks kinda little up there with the college kids but he's up there!!!! The goal is that when he graduates from High School he'll be advanced enough that he will get a full ride scholarship with his violin..... The fact that he's good enough as a freshman in high school to play with the College Orchestra certainly puts him on the right track....:grinning-thumbsup:

Forgive me for bragging on the little bugger but he makes his ole Dad proud!!

Especially because I can't tell you the first thing about music....

He got all his talent from his Momma's side......... :xxrotflmao:

:D

Can he play the fiddle to?:D congrats sounds like you got a good boy!!!

Well, actually violinists do regularly call their violins 'fiddles'..... but they frown on others calling them 'fiddles'..... kind of a inside joke I guess.......

He doesn't play any fiddling music (thou his Grandma and Mom wish he did his Grandma & Grandpa used to have a Country Western Band and played some fiddling music) pretty much only classical music.... his teacher (who has taught him from the beginning) is a very well respected Classical Violinist and has played with Symphonies all over the world. In fact he travels to Russia several times a year to play over there.... hopefully when our son turns 16 he will be able to travel to Russia with his Teacher and get to play over there as well....:grinning-thumbsup:

Though his high school orchestra did do rock songs for their winter concert...:xxrotflmao: ..... was kinda wierd...:D

Dad's pretty proud of him since he excels in his chosen field to a degree that I will never meet.........:o

And to top it off he's a dang good shot to boot....:xxrotflmao:

Congrats to your boy. I hope he has a long, satisfying career with the violin.

As long as he can go hunting when he is not playing, he has the best of both worlds.

He has earned our respect with the violin. Not an easy instrument to learn and master. A full ride scholarship may be in his future.

Such wonderful accomplishments for such youth.

Not many folks know this, but I was actually a Music Ed. major while I was in college. Trombone was My major instrument. It's a tough row to hoe, but if he's good and very studious he'll do fine.

congrats on the fine young man you have there!

Good Point........... :xxrotflmao: :xxrotflmao:

Thanks everybody! Of course one of the best (well actually THE BEST) things about my boy, is that he's a good Christian. 95% of the time he's wearing a Christian t-shirt with a cross hanging around his neck. He says that if they tell him he can't wear his shirts or cross at school, that he won't go to school!! Actually the reason he tried out for the College Orchestra (and the reason the Conductor let him) is that the local Youth Symphony practices on Sunday and he refuses to give up his Church Youth Group which meets on Sunday afternoons.

His slogan is that "Friends don't let Friends go to Hell"............ :grinning-thumbsup: :grinning-thumbsup: :grinning-thumbsup:

Greg, I hope you're still playing....:D.... you would actually understand what he talks about than..... being 'tone deaf' and ignorant I sometimes feel like he's talking a foreign language...:xxrotflmao:

I only play when we have homecoming at Jax State. They have an alumni band that plays pregame. we call it the "OLD FART" band. I marched 3 years in college with one of the premier bands in the US, The Jacksonville State Marching Southerners. It is a blast to go back, but that's the only playing I do anymore.

My oldest daughter was very gifted musically, even though her mother and I have ZERO talent. I have a strong love for music, but don't know the first thing about it.

She was academically gifted, taking college syposiums while still in grade school. She was amazing, but her musical talent, singing and playing instruments was her strength.

Because of this, she got a full ride to the University of Tennessee (Chattanooga) a.k.a. around these parts as UTC. She was in the marching band, was the drum major her senior year, graduated and now teaches band at a Junior High in an Atlanta suburb.

Anyway.......it's funny how small the world is.......

Teaching Jr. High could be tough going thou........... :D

My boy says he doesn't want to teach..... but he's young....:xxrotflmao:

Yeah, you couldn't pay me enough to teach kids at that age. I'd last about two days before I beat the crap out of one of the little angels.

one piece of advice if he decides to be a performance major (professional musician). From one of my college professors: take the money and eat when you can.

Good advice! Actually what he wants to do is become a Christian Artist. Maybe put together some kind of group (that's not the right term?) and play more classical Christian Music.

Spent most of tonight up at the College while my son and the Orchestra rehearsed...... but tonight the 'Concert Mistress' (first Chair Violinist) of the 'Real Symphony' played with the College Symphony................. man is she GOOD!! It was a real treat to sit there and listen to her play........... and I didn't even have to pay...:grinning-thumbsup: :D

The Conductor was alittle irritated that some of the 'first violins' were late getting to rehearsal (apparently they were doing something with the Drama Department.... playing for a play?) so during their break I mentioned jokingly to my son that maybe he'd get to move up if they kept messing up....... he looked at me like I was 'STUPID' (if you have a teenager you know the look) and says "I am playing First Violin"....... (first violin music, NOT first Chair position)

Well, stupid Dad was even prouder of his boy....... I just assumed given his age that he was playing second violin music (generally first violin music is the most difficult.... and besides it just sounds better to be first....:p )..... I had no clue? He proceeds to tell me that I should know that because of where he is sitting..... like an old cowboy turned painter would know this!:dontknow:

But at any rate..... I'm even prouder of him!!:D :D :grinning-thumbsup:

Good to hear of a Dad bragging on his son. I'd say you folks are a lucky family. And a fellow John Deere man too!

Thanks John,

Actually the John Deere is my older brothers........... he still ranches (I left the ranch in the early 80's when times were let's say TOUGH) but our family always has been fans of John Deere equipment........

Thanks again!
God Bless,
Roy
