Received a call just before leaving work this afternoon from a friend. Asked if I was still messing with old Army guns and if so meet him at address ......
Turned out to be a familly selling some of Dad's guns that had passed away. Well, this is what I brought home. I have always been into pre 1946 semi auto pistols and know zip about revolvers, but pistol is in pretty nice condition, so.......

I used mine as a carry piece for a few years before retiring it in favor of a GP100. They are nice, well made revolvers.

These are great revolvers for shooting and very collectable. It looks like the grips may have been refinished at some time. New Service revolvers in any configuration are always in demand.

You continue to live up to your user name - its always educational to see your "finds" on this and the C&R forum.
These are photos of my 1917 that I also purchased from an estate several years ago. I believe it to be a WWII arsenal rework that was parkerized:

I've shot both .45 ACP w/ Full Moon Clips and .45 Auto Rim loads in it. I prefer the convenience of the Auto Rims.

(I read somewhere that WWII arsenal reworked Model 1917s were available from the DCM after the war. They were also transfered to the U.S. Post Office (now the U.S. Postal Service) and their Railway Mail Service for use by clerks and agents.)
The rampant Colt trademark is no longer visible on the frame and the patent data, address, etc., is barely visible on top of the barrel as is the "COLT DA 45" stamping on the side of the barrel.
The revolver has matching numbers 2917 on the frame and arbor (sorry for the blurry picture) . . .

. . . and the barrel near the "United States Property" mark:

The butt is stamped "U.S. Army Model 1917" with the number 115790:

(Unfortunately, some Bubba cut the lanyard swivel off with a hacksaw instead of removing the grips and rubbed off the parkerized finish on the bottom of the butt frame in the process. I bought a replacement swivel assembly from Gun Parts.)
