You'd of thought Mom would have had us pose somewhere other than by the burning barrels?? Of course that's where we cleaned them and burned the remains....... :D

Here is a photo of my brother Jim (left) and me (right) taken about 1941. He was a 25 year old policeman and I was a five year old kid. Shortly after the picture was taken he enlisted in the Air Force, went to flight school and was commissioned an officer (photo of him in service also attached). Served as a pilot throughout WWII and became an airline captain after the war. He was my hero and my best friend.

Roy, we grew up in Canada so he was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He started in Harvard's which is what is in the photo (Canadian version of the North American T-6 Texan) and flew Spitfires and just before the war's end, the Gloster Meteor which was the first British jet fighter and the Allies first operational jet. As an aside, my brother's wife was in the RCAF which is where they met, and her brother was in the RAF Eagle Squadron (Americans who clandestinely joined the RAF prior to the U.S. entry in the war) and was killed on active service in a Hurricane in 1940. My brother was one of the lucky ones who survived.

My country was occupied from June 12th 1940 to May 9th 1945,On May 11th age 9 & half,I decided I was owed something,so I went out and in the space of two weeks had collected 300 handguns .four MP40s, one Spandau 34 which I had to drag home with the barrel over my shoulder & the butt dragging on the ground as I couldnt lift it up.Plus hemets ,bayonets & anything else I thought worth having.A German Sgt gave me a Mauser Hsc & a swastika flag printed one side only for vehicle I.D.( which I still have.) Ive still got 10 of the actual June 1945 acquisitions in my present handgun collection of 54 items.I only use them on rare occasions as I want to keep them as near mint as I can.How I wish I was 9 & half again.,as I remember passing over some items as not wanted at the time,Id cetainly wouldnt pass them over now.

Will hopefully be able to send some pics when I get back from a few days away, thanks for the interest. Also of interest,I met up with an 85 yr old Frenchman couple of years ago,who told me he had a celler full of weapons he collected in 1945,he wanted to get rid of them,as they were mostly MP40s & Sturm 43/44s. Spadaus ,etcAs they were not legally owned I understand he eventually drove a heavy tractor over them ,then dumped them in landfill. What a waste. He died a year ago,so I dont know what happened to any handguns he had. When talking to him,I formed the impression that many of his neighbours also collected quite a lot in 1945,which is still hidden away.Theres bound to be some unusual stuff as it seems the German forces could keep anything they picked up from the various countries they occupied,Ive heard that Goering had a S&W 357 mag as his personal sidearm.
