I recently came into possession of a small semi-auto pistol. There are no markings on it except for a small eagle over N just under the serial(456XXX) and the same just below the rear sight. On the opposite side the only markings is CAL 7.65. Also I am interested in cleaning it up some what if any one has suggestions on the best way to go about this will be greatly appreciated.

First of all..........Welcome to the Gun Collectors Forum. I'm the least knowledgeable person here, but it looks like a small caliber pistol from Mauser. I'm sure that someone else can chime in with more info than that sometime tomorrow, as it's the middle of the night for many of us.

It looks like an Ortgies but there's no medallion in the grip like they usually have.I'll say one thing...it is in awful shape.

I agree with Stan.......... don't shoot it until you've had it properly check over!

No time to research it right now.

WELCOME ABOARD!!

i found in looking on other sites and boards that it is a Sauer 38H, produced sometime between 1939 and 1945 in nazi germany. shooting it was never an issue as the photos do it some justice as you can't see inside it. there will be many days spent cleaning it up and having it checked by a professional gunsmith before another round goes into it.

Yeah, it's a Sauer 38. They are excellent guns, really better shooters than the Walther PP. It's a shame that one is so neglected, but maybe you can restore it to at least shooter status.
