Okay guys, I know zip about AR-15's and am probably gonna trade for one in the next couple of weeks. what should I know to be able to check and assess the rifle? It's a Bushmaster AR-15 A2. what should I check on it to make sure it's good to go?

Wow - that's a loaded question and I'm not AR expert either. First off, I would check the price. If it ain't worth it - take a pass. Then I would look down the bore and check the rifling. How's the bolt face look? Take it all apart and put it back together again. Do a function test. Are you getting it from a dealer? Pawn shop? Friend? Any history?
Incidentally Classic Arms has brand new AR15's for $599. You may want to check them out. I am not an AR-phile by any stretch of the imagination but for under $600 you can't beat it!
Last thing - I am not brand loyal to much, but Bushmaster seem to have a good reputation in the AR world. Please call me after 8PM is you like.

the gun sold new for $950 and has had less than 250 rounds through it. Basically I'll be getting it for the $600 I have in the gun I'm trading him. the main thing I need to know is how do they come apart? I have never even held one, so I wouldn't even really know how to safely load and fire one (I think I have an idea on firing). I guess the same basic stuff applies as on any firearm. I just don't want to look totally stupid on Saturday when I go meet the guy FTF. :)
is there a quick place that would show me how they come apart with some pics?

I just did a search on YouTube and there were several videos about disassembling an AR-15. One of those should give you the basic info that you need.

You could ask him to take the bolt out for you so you can look down the tube? Good luck..

thanks Dog, I'll do that. Main thing is the barrel. I just wanted to know how to get it where I'd be able to see what I need to see. did that make sense to anyone besides me?;)

I didn't understand that you only wanted to take the thing apart, by your 1st post. (you know how "slow" I am sometimes). After "pushing the pin" the thing breaks down and basically falls apart. You'll find a chrome lined bore, looking good, whether it's ever been cleaned or not. Being a Bushmaster, (very good), all original parts, the lower should be numbered XM15-E2S. If you purchase it, there's a simple thing or two to slick up the trigger. I will bring mine and meet you at the range for a test run If you'd like.
Mine is a parts gun that I built myself, Xm15 Bushmaster lower, with a Colt HBar upper, and some other internal parts. Nice little rifles for a "Black Gun". I normally keep mine out of sight, doesn't look good near all that nice wood and blued steel of the others.

I should ahve made myself more clear. Looking back over it, it really didn't make much sense did it? I have never even fired one, but have always wanted one. Having the baby hasn't really helped out as far as expendable cash goes for guns. I have found this one and will probably trade my Smith 500 magnum for it if it is as described. I'm supposed to meet the fella Saturday to check them out. The 500 is fun, but impractical for hunting anything around here except bear and maybe hogs. The AR would be much more versitile for the things found around the house.
Mosko, I will take you up on that if I trade for it. and by the way, I'm gonna keep mine in the safe right beside my Jungle Carbine :)
