Appears to be a Mauser 1871 Karabiner to me, cartridge would be 11 x 60R.
Not a 1871/84 (repeater), 71/84 carbines are extremely rare.

This is all correct. But after the 'engineer' carbine the other day I am holding out for 'one more word' in the description.....:D

:) Okay, let's throw out some long German names and and see if one fits. :) This is probably so simple it is hidden in plain sight.
Jagerbuchsen or Grenz-Aufsichts-Gewehr, although these would not be correct, to me, for a carbine.

While those 'could' be correct..... I don't speak German............. what I'm looking for is in English. Something along lines of 'engineer'....... but other what types of troops used carbines????

You got me on this one, I do not know what to call it other than a carbine.
Maybe it's name is not an actual German model designation, but a "collector" term. Maybe a Cavalry carbine or a Ulan (cavalry) carbine or a Fortress carbine or a Sappers carbine.
A Grenz-A-G was a border guard rifle, actually a carbine as it had a 19.9" barrel. The Jagerbuchsen was actually a short rifle (29.5" barrel).
So my last shot at this one is a Cavalry carbine. :grinning-thumbsup:

You gotta admit it is a sweet looking little gun...... if I had any 'mad' money (or money that wouldn't make the wife mad) I would pick it up.....
Of course I probably would never get to shoot it.....:(
Oh well........ it's on Empires Site if anyone has some extra cash....:D :grinning-thumbsup:
Good Job Blind Hog!:headbanger:

I have the M71 rifle, and never even seen a carbine. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a nice one of those to shoot?

SOG has some 71/84 Carbines, that I have been asking questions about. I have the long rifle and fire it fairly regularly, and it's a lot of fun.
As I have been told, there seems to be no official reason for the existance of a 71/84 carbine. Apparently someone made these up for sales purposes. SOG says they were imported that way, who knows.
In spite of tall that, I have been considering the purchase of one simply as a curio, and for shooting.

I, too, have heard that they are made up carbines. Nonetheless, they look neat. I haven't fire my rifle yet, but do have all the reloading material for it. Just not the time to get some loaded up. Going to try a smokeless load.
