well with my sources the word "cavalry" is no where to be found. My source "Mauser Military Rifles of the world" by Robert W.D Ball. And if you want to get that technical ALL Carbines were designed with the cavalry in mind. Shorter rifles are easier to manage from the back of a horse.

Sorry fr8,

I went with Empire Arms ID of the rifle since I figured they should know..... since it's listed on their site.
:dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:

I'm just trying to keep this interesting and it's supposed to be for fun....

Since I'm trying to do this DAILY......... I don't have time (especially today) to pull out everything and cross check everything..... I assume Empire knows a heck of alot more about what they have then I do..........

I agree with FR8Dude...none of my written sources about the Mexican 1895 Carbine mention anything about a "calvary" specific model.

Dennis may know something that the rest of us don't. But one thing is for sure...Blind Hog could tell us, as he is wise and knowledgeable of such things.

How 'bout it Blind Hog?

Welll, I'm not wise or knowledgeable by any stretch of the imagination. In this, I'll be diplomatic and ride the fence. WmRoy has brung the football and I'll play by his rules. :)
I believe the Germans did not used the specific term Cavalry, Ulan, Hussar or such in their official nomenclature. But as an identifier, the collecting community has adopted the term Cavalry help each other to be on the same page.

To be honest, I do not know.

Okay after a review of Mr. Ball's 'good book'......... I am gonna split it between HerrMesser and fr8. But folk's I don't want to make a practice of this......... I want this 'section' to continue to be fun for you guys and for ME.... so let's remember that and I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or pick on anyone!

Remember there is no prize money or championship rings so in the end it's all about having fun!!! :D

I will cede to fr8dude as when I looked at it there was no postings yet. He posted while I was getting mine together as I was jumping back and forth to Empire and back. Once posted you can't recall it. I wasn't to wild about the pickyness over the argi carbine and not enough info and then this over too much info. I thing that we need some groung rules as to nomenclature.

I think sometimes, a weapon will be "commonly called" Cavalry, Engineers, artilirie, etc. by the seller as a matter of description, when it's really nothing more than "short"!

The Mexican carbine may simply be a carbine, are there others where there is an actual difference? I don't know.

Some short rifles are called "carbines" depending on who you're talking to.

But with the Argie from the other day, there is a physical and distinct difference between the various purpose carbines.

The argie "engineer" is just as different from the Cavalry caarbine, as an M41 Swede is from a regular M96, it simply doesn't use a different model number, since they were manufactured / accepted in the same year / years.

Both are M1891 Argentine carbines, while one is an "engineer" and the other is "cavalry"!

What would happen if the weapon of the day was a Remington Model of 1917?
They were also made by Eddystone, and are exactly the same. Why would there be any need to say Remington or Eddystone?

What if someone called it a "P17"?

Just some thought I had a few minutes ago while reading the posts.

Well, if you look through Ball's "Military Mausers of the World" there are some carbines that are clearly identified as 'calvary carbines'......'engineer carbines'..... and so forth.......... some are clearly unique..... others not so clear......

But have it as it may, there is no way for us to come up with a rule of nomenclature because there are exceptions up and down the field.....

We are just going to have to bear with it and not take it so seriously!!!! If you get beat out today you can always come back and ID a weapon another day..........

Once again remember this is a friendly competition and supposed to be about having alittle fun with our common hobby...........:D :D :D

And of course in the end "What I say goes".....:xxrotflmao: :xxrotflmao:
