I picked up another Finnish m/91-24 with the Civil Guard "S" in the wrong place again. This one is rather large and is on the top of the receiver.
This gun also only has the Civil Guard barrel mark and the Big "S" and nothing else.

This gun also had a Dragoon rear sight. Very neat!

For those of us that are ignorant southern hillbillies would you please show and/or tell us the difference between a 91/24 and a 91/30? I have no clue. :dontknow:

The M91/24 is a long rifle like the M1891. The 91/30's are naturally the shorter conversions adopted in 1930.

Most of the M91/24's being manufactured with a heavier Finn barrel, had to have the barrel stepped down in diameter near the front, approaching the muzzle to allow the fitting of the standard russian bayonet.

Some M1891/24 are also seen "Non-stepped"!

Easiest way for me to tell them appart other than the stepped barrel (which ain't always the case) is to look at the receiver. It has what looks like a Sako marking at first glance, only Sako didn't make M91 rifles. It's actually a stylized S marking that indicates ownership or issue to the Civil Guard. Or something like that.

In other words, for those of you looking at every M44 you see trying to find that elusive 1943 dated carbine, or Tula, or hex or whatever, look at M91 receivers too, 'cuz it could be a M91/24 and not an M91.

dogolden, look at the barrel shank. in the picture above, you can see the "S" inside a shield with 3 fir sprigs above it. that's the thing to look for on m24's. the SIG made ones may have SIG spelled out on the side of the barrel shank. the bohler-stahl was stamped under the wood.

if it's another model of finn made m91, it'll have the tikka or vkt logo, the SAT logo, or p-26 or p-27 stamped on top of the shank. hth, y'all have a good day! Keith

btw, the step barrel is also a dead giveaway. the only ones that were stepped were the 1927 tikka's and the m91/24's. any of them would be something to bring home. iirc, only the first 3000 or so sig barrelled 91/24's had straight barrels. if the 3000 number is wrong, someone please correct me.
