gew88/05. it has the charger guides added to the top of the receiver. Keith

almost forgot, it also had had the clip release for the mannlicher clip removed and a metal block put in it's place, and should have a sheet metal cover over the hole in the bottom of the mag.

most of the gew88's i've seen have come from turkey. all of them have been 88/05 models. i have seen pictures of a few 88/14 models, the stripper clip guides were welded up and then shaped instead of being pre-made and then welded/riveted on.

upgrades on these rifles are numerous and confusing. there is a gew88., gew88z, gew88s, gew88/05, and gew88/14. these upgrades encompassed deepening the rifling in the barrel, opening the throat for the spitzer round, notching the receiver for the spitzer round, and converting the magazine to use standard mauser stripper clips instead of the mannlicher clips.

be wary of posted information on bore diameter. german barrels can be .318-.321, czech made barrels are usually .318. it's best to slug the bore of a gew88 to see if it's safe to shoot. if the bore slugs .321 or better, it's usually safe to fire commercial 8mm ammo out of them. i say usually because there may be other issues with a particular rifle that make it unsafe to fire.

the rifles that gibbs rifle company has been selling lately came from ecuador. they come without bolts, and don't have the gew88/05 conversion done on them, so they still take mannlicher clips.

the only other gew88 model i know of is the turk conversion from the 30's. they put mauser barrels on them, did away with the barrel shroud, and used a wooden handguard. i am not familiar with this model though.

rifles made in 1889 and the early part of 1890 had "G mod 88" on the right side of the receiver instead of the more common "gew88".

makers were spandau, amberg, erfurt, danzig, loewe berlin, and one other i can't remember off the top of my head.

all are legal antiques except a handful made at amberg in 1899.

that's all i've got on them, info is kind of hard to come by. y'all have a good day! Keith
