.....did 03A3 stocks originally come with straight or scant stocks-or both...???...or did it depend on the manufacturer...?:??

The post on the CMP forum has some misinformation in it. All 03A3's were only made with straight-grip stocks without grasping grooves. 03A4's were made with both Type C (full pistol grip) stocks or "scant" grip stocks. 03A4's were only made by Remington, however, Remington did not make the stocks. The stocks were provided to Remington as GFM (government-furnished material), and they were made by either Springfield or one of the WW II stock contractors, like Keystone or American Billiard and Bowling. Remington only made the modifications to the stocks necessary to fit the 03A4: the clearance cut for the bolt handle, the cut for the handguard ring, and squaring off the recoil lug mortice, if it needed it depending on the source of the stock.

"Scant" stocks were first made at Springfield Armory in 1942 as replacements for the 03 overhaul program. This was before the 03A3 drawings were approved. These scant stocks have the scalloped recoil lug mortice, no handguard ring cut (since there was no such thing at the time), and the fit and finnish were conparable to the pre-war Type C stocks. They were marked with a small "s" in the cut-off clearance. On both of the stocks that I have, the "s" is upside-down.

When WW II started, Ordnance had on hand some millions of stock blanks from the WW I era, many stored at Rock Island. These were "discovered" in 1941 at the time Remington tecnhicians were inspecting and evaluating the machinery that had been used at RIA for production of '03 rifles in 1904-1913, and 1917-1919. Remington "traded" a bunch of 45 ACP ammo for ~5000 of the blanks to faciliate start-up of their first 03 contract. A few prototype rifles for the British were made that had stocks that had that odd "Enfield" type grip, but those never went into production. The production contract was for the M1903 rifle as it had been produced at RIA, including the Type "S" stock (straight grip, with grasping grooves.) The elimination of the grasping grooves were one of the first production shortcuts. When the 03A3 was first standardized, the stock remained straight grip, with the rectangular recoil lug mortice, handguard ring cut, and the cut for the 03 rear sight base, so the stock could be used on either rifle. The "scant" was developed and first made at Springfield, and the Type C drawing was modified to reflect the "scant" as an option, where blanks that were not large enough to make the full grip "had" to be used. Most of the old WW I stock blanks were provided to contractors as GFM, to be machined into finished stocks after the 03A3 was standardized and the drawings were approved. AFAIK, all of the contract scant stocks were machined to fit either rifle. The early Keystone scants rivalled the Springfields in quality of fit/finnish, with things gradually deteriorating to the point where both fit and finish truly deserved the moniker "warthog" that later shooters (including me!) gave them.
