View Full Version : Diopter Sights
Does anyone know of a web site that explains in detail the use and function of these sights. such as front and rear irises, inserts etc. I'd very much like to understand the pros and cons of these sights before investing big $$$ for them. Thanks toby

I have had a Lyman aperture site added to my Mauser K98k and before I bought it I trawled all the manufacturers sites to see what was available.

Don't know if this helps but the pics are nice
Did you have to drill and tap the receiver? The prices look very reasonable compared to the Swiss of upwards of 300, but they clamp on, at least the one I was looking it did. How do you like the Lyman? toby

Yes it is drilled and tapped but as I know my eyesight won't get better AND I can't afford the sniper scopes for the K98 I decided to go ahead. I think it looks well on the rifle and I enjoy shooting it. (Not as much as my Enfield Nº4 but almost!!)

Toby, here's a picture of the three diopter sights that I have mounted on K31's.
http://www.knology.net/~lolo/diopters.jpg
The top is the new Swiss products STDIOPS that is good for 75 to 1,000 yards. It came with an Anschutz rear adjustable iris. These rear iris's are great for tuning the peep hole to your current light conditions and permits the front sight to focus more clearly. This setup came with a fixed insert for the globe front but I purchased a Gehmann adjustable front sight for it. This is a great setup.
The middle is a W+F clamp on that I recently got off of Gunbroker. Surprisingly for only $125.00 as I was the only bidder. It is extremely well made. These usually sell for around $300.00 or so and I was glad to find it.
The bottom is a homemade job that I put together a couple of years ago from a John Wilkes sight that I got from e-bay. I fabricated the clamp on part myself and it works great.
The thing about these sights is that the rear diopter allows the front sight to come into better focus. I've read some good articles on all the why's and so forth concerning the way that a peep sight works but will have to dig around to find them. I just like a peep sight for target shooting period. They don't shrink my groups into one ragged hole but they do allow me to shoot a lot better than just with open sights. I can do better with a scope but prefere a peep. I can do more to improve my groups by good shooting practices than the sights but they do really help me shoot more comfortable if you get my meaning. I don't compete with my rifles so I can't comment on that aspect but I like having them equipped so I can shoot better with them and the diopters help me do just that. All of mine are clamp on for the K31's and I like that because I can swap them between rifles.
Hope this helps some.
They look really nice LoLo. I could tell the first, that's the one I'm lookjng at getting. toby

Toby, in case you haven't seen it, here is an article by Chuck Hawks on the basics of sights including peep sights.
http://www.chuckhawks.com/choosing_sights.htm
Back in the day in the Canadian Army our service rifles were equipped with peep sights (including, Duncan, the Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk I which had peep sights as standard equipment). The improvement in the shooter's accuracy over open sights was phenomenal due to the longer sight radius and ghost ring effect.

Thanks George! I can't believe that I didn't know about this forum until just a few days ago. I'd have been here a lot sooner.
I think the LHOs ship to the three field testers either today or tuesday. After they put them through the paces for two weeks we'll release them for sale.
I just saw that Carlos is here too. cool. :D

Dad began submitting the SP Diopter series for Swiss approval to a very connected friend in Switzerland about 6 years ago. A number of Diopters were sent to Switzerland for evaluation and they all disappeared into the different agencies without approval. But!
It looks like we're actually going to get complete approval this time.

The Swiss Products Diopter has finally been approved by the SSV for all Swiss sanctioned shoots world wide. :D
We currently have the only Diopter that goes from 75 yards to 1,000 yards without rail changes. The first two groups of Diopters have been shipped to Europe and to Switzerland itself. Looks like we're finally in the door!:cool-smiley-1: Thank you, SSV!
