I've been shooting with my father(rip) I own a 1917 enfield and a model 40 smith and wesson from his collection. I would like to purchase a Colt 1911 M1 and I would love to pick up a Garrand but I don't know what to look for. I know this is a wide open request but I will read all responses. I'm a newbe but I learn fast. Thanks for any help.

You said it, Colt 1911, they are available. Some are worn out and the selling price usually reflects that. A later version rebuild, (say Korea or Viet Nam era) is your best bet for shooting. You'll find them "pricy".

M1 Garand but I don't know what to look for.
Garand has 1 "r", and the M1 is a fine rifle to own. Be careful of the "parts guns" made up on investment receivers with "no manufacture name". Look for a Springfield, Winchester, or H&R". There are several grades, for shooting, initially, look for a "rack grade" and don't worry to much about things like "TE" (throat errosion) etc. Just make sure the seller gives you a "runs good" guarantee.

Best Regards...

Thank Mosko, I will keep what you said in mind. Money is not the issue, I want a good shooter that I can shoot with the son and grandkids that I then can leave them after I'm gone, so they can enjoy shooting the way I do with dad in mind.

Another thing you might be interested in for condition and shootability purposes concerning the Colt 45 auto pistol, Colt built some for Argentina, then Argentina built some themselves from Colt parts and finally some were built completely by Argentina.

I'm not much of a pistol man, but I've seen a few of these in excellent condition with the only difference being that they had the Argenrine markings added.

IIRC these are normally referred to as M27's or M28's.
