Finished cleaning up the K31 that I bought at the gunshow yesterday and thought I'd post a couple of pic's. It's a 1934 all matching with some pretty black stripes and contrasting wood. It was pretty dull before I started and is the first one that I have bought that was full of old caked in grease. Had a tag under the butt plate also. I think I always like the cleaning up part when you get them home better than anything. I'm always dreaming of finding a folded up $100.00 bill or something in there.:D

That tag could be better than a $100 bill. Imagine if you can contact the tags owner and learn the history of YOUR gun!

I've heard of several good contacts made that way and even went as far to make out a letter on one of mine but never did mail it. It would be great to do that though. I like reading all the post about folks who found and contacted the former owners or their families.

Well, actually I've been back and forth doing different things but the one thing that I always do to get a lot of the grime out is to scrub it with a rag wetted with Denatured alcohol. All of the K31's that I have aquired have been refurbed at some point in their life and shellac seems to have been the finish on all of them. This one was nearly void of any finish left but there was some in the finger grooves and under the top forend wood that dissolved and lifted with the alcohol. After that I just mixed some amber shellac pretty thin and recoated everything and buffed with some 000 steel wool. A couple that I did a refinish on was given an oil finish. Some of them wasn't as dirty and all I did was to wipe them down lightly with the damp rag. This alcohol cleaning along with a little fresh shellac will really brighten up dull wood. If any grain patterns are there it will bring them out also.
