Here's the MAS 49/56 I picked up in a partial trade a few months ago. I've picked up most of the accessories you can pick up easily here in the US such as a bayonet, night sight, recoil pad, and the cleaning and spares kit. I also have the field manual, naturally in French (which I speak only well enough to be held in contempt by a Parisian waiter while attempting to order breakfast;) ) so I am grateful for the pictures. I'd like to get an issue scope and mount, but those are getting rarer and expensive.

Hey George, and good morning to ya! I have some French rifles including two 49/56's like the one you have pictured, also I have a MAS 49 that has not been converted. The 49 is the sniper version with the scope kit in the leather "box". I forget the official designation for the scope. The same scope fits the 49/56 also.
Other than a slight slam fire (with soft primers) problem, these are absolutely fine rifies. I acquired all these "back when" they were actually very cheap for what they are.
I remember years ago when Century or someone, had the scope kits for $79. I haven't seen any for sale in quite a while. IIRC the last scope I saw for sale was on an auction site that went for $400 + bux.
Have you fired the rifle? If so what ammo do you use? There was some Syrian ammo available that was quite crappy, so I easily made some using Lapua 6.5 X 55mm Swede brass that works perfectly.
Enjoy the rifle!
Best Regards...

Hi,
Service scope:
- "Lunette Modèle 1953 / APX L806" (Scope Model 1953 / APX L 806 - APX stands for Puteaux Workshop, a State Armory next to Paris)
It is also the FRF1 sharpshooter rifle scope and send me back 27 years ago when 49/56 with an APX L806 (both were fitted by the Service Armory and a scope would not match - accuracy - another rifle) was my rifle as young Leftnant JG chief of the Infantry Platoon of my ship (also had a MAC 1950 Pistol and a MAT 49 SMG :p ).
Scarce and expensive even here in Europe (currently approx. €450/ $640 in its leather box with eye cup in good condition)
For more info check gunboards (French section)
Cheers

There is an issue scope set up for auction on Gunbroker, but it is a bit too spendy for me right now. I did place a bid on the aftermarket mount, however.
I have shot the rifle only once using the Privi Partizan ammo. Functioned fine and was kind of fun, actually.
And if anyone needs some extra magazines, drop me a PM. Due to an ordering mix up, I have five more than I really need or want and would be happy to make a deal.
