All kidding aside, this would be the ultimate milsurp in my opinion. I would gladly give up all my milsurps for this one rifle & never be able to have another. Of course, it would have to actually work y'know. This rifle has an interesting development and history behind it.

The 1st time I ever saw one of these was at the Infantry Museum @ Fort Benning (Georgia) back in '83 when I was in basic training. And then when I went back to Fort Benning in '89 for OCS we had a couple hours of 'down time' so I took the bus and toured the museum again.

Fascinating rifle! But, I have been sworn to secrecy! Any takers? The only other thing I'll comment on for this rifle is that for it's size it seems kind of heavy, especially when compared to modern assault rifles.

Close! But no horseshoe. WmRoy is out of pocket today & he asked us to keep an eye out for the correct response.

The exact nomenclature is: (drum-roll please) _______.

I'm dq'ed and actually know this one!!!!

Saw one today at a gunshop I was at. It was on display but had a big sign on it saying "NOT FOR SALE!!!". It is part of the shop owner's personal collection and he only displays it to draw crowds.....

:BangHead:

(Not that I could have afforded it anyway....)

I was on the bench 3-30, 3-31 and 4-1...I think I am eligible (my last id was on 3-29)

So...MP 43...7.92 x33 kurtz, manufactured by either Haenel, Mauser or ERMA.

This was the fore-runner to the stg 44.

STG 44 and MP 44 are the same weapon I believe. Of course, the MP 43 and MP 44 are the same as well....only difference that I know of is that the ones made in 1944 are stamped MP 44, and the ones made in 43 are stamped Mp 43. :D

Yes, the MP44 and STG44 are the same. The name was changed in 1944, primarily due to the "role" this weapon served. The 44, was different from the 43, only by a screw on grenade launcher rather than a clamp on type, and a rail for a scope. They both fired the 7.92 x 38mm (Kurtz) round.

So, depending on who you talk to, and when in 1944 you were referring to this weapon, it would be an MP44 or STG44. Both are correct.

I'm glad Iquitos got it, as I think that since an mp 44 and an stg 44 are the same, he would have gotten it before I ever guessed.

I guessed mp 43 because DOG gave us a bum steer I think on the stg 44 guess :cussing: :BangHead: :devil-smiley-1:

Considering SC's post about Hitler, IIRC, when Mr. Hitler was told about the MP44, he had one of his tantrums and ordered the production stopped due to the waste of resorces.

Maybe it was Albert Speer, the armaments minister, who decided to change the name to STG44, and call it an "Assault Rifle", then continue the manufacture to circumvent the order.

"Small arms of the World", actually states that the name was changed for "political reasons".

I knew Hitler wasn't very keen on the new tech rifles...he believed in the k98. I guess our side was fortunate that he had that hang-up. :D

Amazing that the German Military was so adept at creating new war machines, and lucky for us, not implementing them properly. IE Me 262, etc.
