Hello My Friends,
I posted this on the "Rifle" Forum, but thought this morning that it might make more sense to have it on the "Workbench Forum", so am reposting here. I couldf use some technical advice as I have no real machining skills, other than dremel tool experience for hobbies! Thanks for any advice!
I have a Mosin Nagant M91/30 Barreled action that was chopped into a slightly shorter carbine length barrel, like a M91/59 rifle. It came from CFS, and I want to make a Scout Rifle type shooter out of it with spare parts. Can't afford a Jeff Cooper Steyer Scout Rifle! I have a used 1x14 L threaded Flash hider, the type that is the AK 7.62 mm bird cage flash suppressor for threaded AK barrels. I decided I want to have my MN barrel threaded for this Flash suppressor or to also find a muzzle break for it. Thought that would help control the muzzle blast, giant flash and bucking rise of th MN carbine type rifles (M38, M44 M91/59). Minre is an early attempt at a MN 91/59 and I have nothing to lose playing with it, as it came stripped and cheap. Do I need to have the barrel diameter turned down before having it threaded? Has anyone ever done such a similar project for a bolt actio rifle barrel? Thanks for any advice and comments. I may just take this baby to a good gunsmith and see how much to do all this might be, if it is not something this average Joe can do at home with a TAT kit.
Thanks for any guidance my friends!

This is an easy thing to really mess up a nice barreled action.I would not try it at home.It really doesn't accomplish anything.Been there, done that.

if its collector value is not present then by all means have a smith do the work. it will require the use of a lathe and some $.

I can see the need for a Flash Hider, but not a muzzle brake on a 7.62x54Rmm round. It has similar ballistics to the .308 Win., so there is no need for a Brake of any kind. Muzzle Brakes belong on the .50 BMG sniper rifles and some smaller safari caliber rifles.

It sounds like you're just dying to put the flash hider/muzzle break on it, so do it. While it doesn't appeal to me, knock yourself out bro. Put some pix up when you get done okay? :grinning-thumbsup:

SAC, I wasn't aware that 91/30's had any collector value? :dontknow: Just kidding man. While I went ahead and "said it" some of you were thinking it (right)?

Perhaps a Darrell's scout mount with an inexpensive scout type scope would be a winner? Just thinking out loud amigo.

In fact, post some pix of what your Nagant & show us what we're up against okay?
