I picked up a reprint of a Russian Mosin manual. It instructs the user to lightly wipe down cartridges with oil. Have any of you done this? If so did you see any noticeable differences?

Not a good idea. This can cause a build up of chamber pressures. That's why you always run a clean dry patch down your rifle before shooting it.

I'm not keen on oiling cartridges either. 6 years 11Bravo and all I ever did to my ammo in the field was wipe it clean and dry. Just curious as to why the Russians would instruct their troops to do so.

Nix, nein, no way.....hatchers journal details rifle failures from just such a event. the cases dont adhere to chamber wall and too much pressure is exerted on bolt lugs leading to blown rifles...I think that he had three rifles let go at one of the early camp perry shoots..
