My pal Barry (whom I work with) has been bitten by milsurpitis. Last year he got a m38 from me (that I got from Ol' Fella). Then he decided to buy his wife  a compact .45. Then a .380. Then a 12ga. shotgun, a Steyr 9mm. The .45 & .380 have been traded away. And now he wants a good deer rifle?

He found a Mauser rebuilt by Fred @ LowTech. What a dream. Timney trigger, 2 position safety, Core-lite stock, forged bolt, 6x42 scope, & new .308 barrel as well. Unfortunately for either of us, we haven't made the time to take her to the range for a showdown. I'm predicting 1" shotgroups on the first go 'round.

Welcome aboard BarryB! Glad you found us. Nice pix eh? But, a better looking rifle than anything. Hopefully we'll get some time to hit the range, get her zeroed for you, & get some good shooting done!

Barry, welcome.I am looking forward to seeing what that one will do.
Fred does wonderful things to Turkish Mausers.Just think,DOG and I unboxed all of the original Mausers when Fred got them in.We had a picture of about 60 or so leaning on the fence at Fred's place.

Try 100 Turks Stan! Yep, they're all goners now. Except of course for the one you hand picked! Most of the stocks & handguards were cracked and/or broken. We salvaged what could & sold them off...
Interestingly enough, a Turk stock burns exceedingly well in the fireplace amigo's. And when the smoke clears there's some metal spare parts in the fireplace as well!
That reminds me too much of the 8mm Fred built for me... too bad it was stolen before I got a chance to shoot it  :(
welcome aboard Barry! I hope you get some good shooting from that custom!

Well the wait is over , I was able to shoot the new 308 at the greenville gun club. I went as a guest and only had about a half hour to kill. But this is really a sweet shooting gun! I fired 10 rounds and was not yet at zero but it came in to within an inch and it started out about 5 inches out. but i was outta time. Some things should not be rushed.....there will be much more time spent with this new found friend. See you at the range soon.

Well, we finally got to the go to the range yesterday afternoon. We stopped by & picked Fred up en route. Fred brought out a .250 he's been playing with for his personal use. I brought my sporterized 8mm & the pig (my Finn m39). I toyed with some other handloads, & brought some high dollar Norma 7.62x54 to experiment with.
The new .308 shot under 1" groups right off the bat. She was shooting a about a foot off to the right. Barry experimented with some different bullets & he got the same results shooting just about everything except when shooting some factory Winchester rounds. Then the shot groups opened up to maybe 1.5". All in all, not bad shooting for a rookie with a new rifle.
Sweet shooting by Barry!
I didn't do so hot. With handloads on the 8x57 I was shooting between 3" - 4" groups. But that's okay, sometimes you win, & sometimes you don't. In any case it would've been deer. Next time?
Fred's .250 seem to shoot about 1.5" on the first go around. He wasn't too happy with his results & I guess he's heading back to the drawing board. He's thinking the .250 should've been well under 1". I agree because I've been shooting with him for so many years and never seen him shoot his own rifle with a 1"+ shot group.
The pig shot surprisingly poor @ 100 yards even with Norma bullets. But, I got the box of 20 for a song and a dance (the real reason I bought the bullets was for the brass). I'll reload for her one of these days & see what she will really do (incidentally, I have shot about 3" groups with her using milsurp ammo before).
Maybe next time? I think so! :grinning-thumbsup:

Ok gentelmen, the 308 ha s seen some real target time finally. I have about 30 rounds of three shot groups each . The real treat was being able to break the gun in and learn some good shooting from DOG and Fred. Wow not every day your gunsmith can take time to help you zero in a custom built rifle. The details are in the clipboard stages but the gun is very accurate even though i was shooting several different loads and trying to narrow the search for the best bullet for this gun. Right out of the box this is a sweet shooter. Maybe DOG will give us some comments on the shoot. I am very much the novice but am addicted for sure. Ill be back son with more accurate ammo and ill bring pictures of the learning curve in progress. Great gun buit by Fred!

It took a little work to get her fine tuned but we're getting there. Some minor scope adjustments were needed to make the bullet(s) go where they're supposed to.
