View Full Version : H&R Sportsman woes...

Went out to the range today with my new (to me) Sportsman and 686.

The 686 performed flawlessly!

The Sportsman on the other hand has some timing issues.

Sometimes in SA and DA the cylinder doesn't advance, if you try again sometimes it will sometimes it wont...I also had numerous light primer strikes, which eventually all ignited on the second or third go-round.

When I got home I noticed that the hammer screw was loose by two turns...I tightened and it loosened up after a few dry fire cycles.

Ideas?

Thanks

I would think either Loc-Tite or some other such product.I personally have used super glue to secure screws which have a tendency to loosen.

c-fish,
Another suggestion.
When you get the windage set on your Sportsman, take one screw out, and put a drop of loctite on the threads, then do the other.
The 999's are know for having the screws come loose, causing the rear sight blade to be lost.
I have been there and it is no fun.
I had to have a machinist friend make me a couple, because they were not available.
There is a company making them now, and I have bought a couple, but H&R had many small changes in the sights over the years, and you will have to hand fit the new blade to your gun.
Do yourself a favor, and use a little loctite, before youe lose your sight!

James, thanks for the tips.

Not sure if I'll have any sight issues until I get this thing running 100% though...:(
