Anybody used the D/T drill & tap scope mount? is it a side mount?

Swapped for a nice k31 with a cracked stock today. it's got dark wood dowels drove into the stock for a repair. Bolt face is very clean does'nt look fired very much and the stock is not to chewed up. it's got the little card to.

Mosko is the guy to probably ask about this. I think he's hit the sack for the night, but hopefully he'll spot this tomorrow and chime in.

Two questions and three/four answers. No, I don't have one. Yes, It is a side mount. IIRC, it mounts about 3/4" left off center. Other options are available also(rt hand clamp on and scout). Best-o-Luck

I have one, and I have used it. It came on a K31 that I bought, I didn't put it there. It puts the scope too far to the left for me to comfortably use while aiming with my right eye, even with one of those leather cheekpieces for the M1C/D. If I use my left eye for aiming, it is perfect. Sounds a bit strange, but I am losing my sight to diabetic retinopathy, and my right eye is "going" faster. I may have to learn to shoot using my left eye, and it would be helpful if I don't have to learn to shoot left-handed, too.

I have considered making or improvising some offset rings that will put the scope tube just to the left of the ejection opening, and turning the scope 90 degrees counterclockwise so the ejected brass won't hit the windage turret. (This was SOP with Krag sidemounts when I was a boy.) The windage then becomes the elevation and vice-versa. That would make the mount useable with my right eye, and it would make it possible to reload with chargers. I cannot reload with chargers with the clamp-on mount on the right side of the rifle ... scope tube gets in the way.

YMMV ...

Perhaps I wasn't clear .... shooting right-handed, but using the left eye. I would prefer NOT to shoot left handed, even if I loose the sight in my right eye.

Have you thought about a scout mount?? I REALLY LIKE my Darrell's mount!

Took a very nice 5x5 muley buck with it up in South Dakota.....

Its good to see BobS over here. He is the shooter on my site and a wealth of knowledge. He is a real Sgt. York of a shot. :duel:

I have used two of Darrel's "scout mounts": one on a K31 (as intended) and one K31 mount modified slightly to fit on a 96/11 or 1911 long rifle. All that takes is to mill about .060 off the inside of the "legs, and it will fit the issue base of the long rifles. If you're careful you could do it with a file.

Both set-ups were unsatisfactory for my purposes. They positition the scope much too high above the bore to get any kind of cheek weld with the issue stock, and the available scopes have eyereliefs that are either too short or too long for me. Parallax is an issue, and I found it was impossible to shoot with the type of precision I am used to. Admittedly, a lot of that has to do with the scopes more than the mount. For shooting that requires less precision, like woods hunting, I can see why they are popular.
