I recently received a pair of 1903/38 Turkish Mausers from SOG. These need to be cleaned due to a medium amount of cosmoline...everywhere. (I love that stuff, but don't reall care for removing it. :D )
My question is, do any of you have one or have also seen these equipped with the rear band being retained soley by a long screw/pin? (Screw/pin goes through both sides of the band and also through the stock) SurplusRifle.com just shows one with the rear band spring. Like with most other mausers. But, now that I look closer I can see a hole through that band also. Just no screw/pin present.

Mine are stuck and I may have to drill out the end of the screw/pin. Does this screw/pin have threads under the head or near the end?

Thanks for any help or information.

I guess one can expect these little problems from $60 rifles. It's OK, I worked on them some more last night. Now, on one of the rifles the screw can turn but doesn't back out. On the other, it's still stuck. I will have to drill that one out then use some creative welding and grinding to reshape/refill the end.

Okay...I'm a little rusty 2 this & it's been quite some time since I've owned a Turk, but here goes.

In looking @ your picture what I see is the detent spring (for lack of a better word). And I see the barrel band too. Okay, from what I remember the Turks originally used the barrel band with a nail (that's about what it was - look for a worn off flat tip head). They then modified the stock with a detent spring (used to keep the barrel band in place). I've seen them with the barrel band, detent spring, & no screw.

And this looks like what you have! :grinning-thumbsup:

Okay, I see. You borrowed the picture from someone else & you are wanting to know if anyone has a pin, correct? Disregard stupidpost above. Duhhh...

The 1903 originally had the spring band retainer. The 1938 modifications held the band with a bradded screw. Yes, it's a screw if you look closely that has been installed and piened on the end. This is the reason it will turn, but usually won't back out. Use a small punch and drift it out. To repair, tap the hole and us just a bit bigger screw. The 1938 Turks are found with both 1903 and 38 stocks, as well as 1903's with 38 stocks. I have several that are mixed every which way.

Thanks guys. I got them out last night, and the rifles apart. Exacly as you described Mosko. I'll be hunting for a nail or screw that I can use to replace one of them. (It broke) The other I believe I can reuse by reinstalling it as the arsenal did.

A side note on these rifles. One of them has a really nice grained stock. Kind of reminds me of most Swedish mauser M96 stocks. The other seems kind of dried out. I will have to clean both though, due to the cosmoline.

Thanks again.
