I don't own a single shotgun (Yes, I know. It's blasphemy). I've simply never gotten into shotguns. I've shot them a few times at the range when somebody brought one, but they just don't do it for me.
I understand that thay have a place and serve a good purpose and for somethings, nothing can do what a shotgun does. However, they simply don't float my boat. No offense.
I take it by all the shotguns and the pic that your into the cowboy shooting, right?

That's right, although I havn't shot any since last spring. I've shot matches a good bit in north Alabama and Georgia. These are not my cowboy guns though, I've had these long before I got into Cowboy shooting. Cowboy shotguns get treated a might too rough to use my good ones at it. Here's a picture of my main cowboy gun, It's a Stevens hammer double at the top. All I shoot is black powder also. Hope to get back in the swing of cowboy shooting before long.

I thought about getting into it one time. I went so far as to stop at table at a gun show in Knoxville and ask about it. They asked me to come to one of their cowboy shoots.
I was dressed in a polo and khaki shorts. I asked if I could come dressed like that to the match and he said, not if you're going to shoot in the match.
That killed it for me, as I'm not interested in dressing up in a cowboy outfit. I guess it's fine for some folks, but I'm not into that. I think I would like shooting a six gun and/or a lever action rifle. I think that would be fun, but I'm just not into the dress-up aspect of the whole thing. To each his own however.

I've had some mighty good times and met a lot of good folk's going to these shoot's but everybody's got different things that they enjoy. There's really a whole lot more to the cowboy shooting than just the competition part and the clothes are a part of it. Some of the clubs are pretty strict and some are more laid back and let new shooters ease into the sport. You could lay out a lot of cash in a short while and find out that you really don't enjoy it and that would be bad. Fortunatly I started off with some clubs that would lend you nearly bout anything that you needed. Like I say It's been a lot of fun for me and my family.

Yeah, that was part of my concern. I did some quick math and since I'd have to start from scratch, buy not only cowboy weapons, but clothing, it was gonna add up pretty quick, then only to find out that I didn't enjoy it.
I think most clubs would do themselves a favor by having a "greenhorn" match, where newcomers were invited to come dressed as they want, maybe even borrow a six shooter and holster, just to see if they like it. I'd be willing to bet if they did that, there ranks might grow a bit more than by being so strict. I don't mind laying out the cash if it's something I'm sure I'd like.
That's one thing that I liked about shooting in IDPA. I picked up a "cheap" 1911A-1 (Charles Daly) and a fobus holster and I was set to shoot in a match. Once I knew that I'd liked it, I sold the "CD" and moved up to a Springfield Armory Custom Loaded that had a match barrel installed and custom trigger job.
I was still able to use the same fobus holster with the "SA", so after taking the plunge on the SA, I was pretty much set.

Yep that's true. Fortunately I started off in some clubs that were like that. I already had most of the equipment and what I didn't have I borrowed until I came up with it. At the North Alabama Regulators they have some special matches during the year to make things more interesting such as Cop's and Cowboy shoot where the local LEO's are invited to shoot with their issue gear. Then we have a Wild bunch match where you can use your 1911 pistol for the whole match and some other fun type matches. All the requirments are that you shoot lead bullets. I've always been pretty light hearted myself and enjoy the company as much as the shooting.

Agreed, the people that you meet are what make it fun. I like to cut-up and joke around a lot. I get carried away sometimes and get stern looks from the IDPA Range Master. :o

I was just reading through the threads here and thought, just maybe, this would be something of intrest to me. I was wondering if either of you gentlemen might know of a club or organization in the northern Illinois area that would be into Cowboy shooting. I was a member of the Army pistol team and rifle team for several years and matches of this type might be loads of fun for me and my family.. I did do some black powder matches years back and really enjoyed them. Thanks for the time.

dont feel left out coorslightguy i too seem to suffer this no shotgun dont really want one bad enough to buy one syndrom. a while back there was that coachgun with hammers that grabbed my eye but i just couldnt do it, and the thing is i could use one from time to time for blastin skunks around the house at night...just have to add a 1million candle power spot light to it! my total shotshells i have fired is probably under twenty with room to spare. anyhow if i ever do get one it will probably be one of those side hammer coachguns, nef, or a cheap pump. either way i go i want to have an open choke for night work in the yard or for stoppin bad guys...we have lots of new people moving in around here...all gangster types and of course they have brought with them their hardcore drugs...just a matter of time before i have trouble the way i see it. only home on my road, at the end of a dead end road with a junkyard half way down it. be an easy place to knock off for a bady...well he thinks anyhow.
back to side by sides, i once saw the cutest little gun 20 ga breda(spelin) stainless reciever engraved the works. its book value wasnt very high to everyones amazment, man that was a nice gun. seems like it was a standard grade gun too, wow that was a nice slim and trim peice.
