The one thing I like more than shooting, is to shoot and put meat in the freezer at the same time..

What do you guys use for deer hunting?

I use:
Rem700VS in 22-250 w/a Bushnell 6-18x50.
NEF handi-rifle in 45-70 w/a Burris 1.5-6x32
#1mk3 Enfield dated 1970, original configuration w/ an ATI scope mount and a Bushnell 3-9x40..

The Remmy and the NEF are the only two that saw action this past year, but they provided plenty of steaks, steaw, and sausage for the freezer....

I've shot guns all my life, but I've never been hunting (go figure). I don't have a problem with it at all and I understand that it's a necessary part of good wildlife management.

That being said, I've got plenty of buddies who hunt and they all say that Mausers and Mosin-Nagants make good reliable hunting rifles.

Well, hunting is for rednecks! So I joined this exclusive club about 4 or 5 years ago, and even managed to buy an old truck along the way!

I usually hunt with an 8mm Turkish Mauser that Fred converted for me last year. It is a real sweet piece of work too; Boyd stock, glass bedded, custom trigger, free floated barrel, and a real nice Burris 2.75X scout type scope. A true brush gun because it is compact and powerful (will knock down anything in the southeastern US and keep it down). With handloads I can get dialed in to under an inch with no problem at 100 yards.

Sometimes I hunt with my Winchester Model 70 in .223. This was the first real rifle I ever had. A gift from a friend of mine for helping him build a shop. She has a Redfield 4X 5-star scope on her, glass bedded, free floated barrel, custom trigger, etc,. With cheap milsurp bullets I get routine 1" shot groups. With brand bullets I get under an inch. And when I make handloads, well it gets boring, the bullets are all kissing each other.

Having said that, I have never shot at a deer! I have seen plenty of them. And plenty of them have seen me as well!! :xxrotflmao:

Well, I figured a picture or two is needed so let me see what I can come up with okay? If the correct picture comes up it is one that Ol' Fella took of me last deer season en route to an afternoon nap (deer hunting). Orange tee shirt is a dead give away I think? Oh yeah, handsome devil I think! :cool-devil:

Sorry Dog, I'll always be an enfield guy! I'll give you this, however, the rifle is definitely better looking than the guy holding it!

The list could get long.I'll list them in order of how favorite they are with me.
Remington Model Seven in .308
Golden State Arms .303British
H&R "Buffalo Classic" in 45/70
NEF ultra lite weight in .243 with "survivor" butt stock
Sporterized Enfield No.1MkIII(ex GL) with scope
Mosin 91/59 in synthetic stock with scout scope

I didn't "blood the Model Seven this year but did the GSA and the ex GL.
I have a purpose for each one depending on where and what I am hunting.

Yes,they are exactly alike except I found an original drill and tap Weaver scope mount and had Fred mount it.I put an old refurbed Weaver 1.5X4.5X20 single bell scope on it.It is strictly period looking.Great shooter.

my main rifle is a m48 with one of the 19 3/4 7mm barrels. connie is using a T99 with an 11" pull and 20" of barrel shooting hand cast 185gr lee. I shot a deer with it opening morning my first cast bullet kill. my rifle had got blown of the top of the car and screwed the scope up. shot a small spike this year with a m48 open sight all original. i try to take them all out at least once, took to 2 to the truck a couple times took two into the wood once, both my 48's was only going to use the scope as a last resort

This year (2005 season) I used my 1948 K-31 Swiss to bag a nice 5 point buck up in South Dakota. Last year (2004 season) I tried to use one of my Spanish m1916's (unscoped) in 7mm but when no decent (all where over 300 yards) shots I switched to my old standby my Remington 700bdl in 30-06 with an old 4 power Weaver Scope...... of course then I came up on a nice doe (had a doe tag last year) and took her with about a 30 yard shot..... just walked up right on top of her and her boyfriend....:duel:

Here's me with my 5 point buck (to the right of my buck is my nephew's 6 pointer)..... rotten kid!

I try to rotate my rifles when I go hunting. The only factory made one is a Rem 760 in 30-06 that i bought cheep 25 years ago. Seems the slide was pressing hard on the barrel and wouldn't group better than 3" at100 yds. The I have four custom made mausers, a Amberg 1917 in 6mm rem one of my favorites, a commercial FN in 270 wby, a G33/40 in 257 roberts, and a vz 23 in 300win mag and trying to get a 8mm rem mag on a mark x put together.

7.65 arg.
Remington .270
Browning A-Bolt .300 Win. Mag.
Marlin .22
Olympis Arms AR-15 5.56

Hey Dog, was the rifle in your pic the one that was at Fred's a while back? If so, I saw it while he was waiting on the correct scope to come in. How do you like the forward scope mount. Thinking of letting him put one on my 7.65.

How about a .257 Roberts Custom Rifle built on a 98 Mauser. Topped with a 6x Leupold.

My first rifle 18 years ago at Christmas and it has killed the following:

In Texas, White tail, Prong horn, Black Buck Antelope, Wild Turkeys, Lots of varmints.

In South Carolina, White Tail Deer

In Maryland, White Tail Deer

Forgot how many the numbers add up too, but sure have had a lot of fun!

I not through yet, either.

i dont hunt, between my back probs and the fact that i just dont care for it anymore. i have a few animals on my personal hit list. porkypines, coons, skunks, coyotes, and woodpeckers all meet allah if i see them around.
for a 22 i use what i call my cross model bubbafied marlin. some of it is m989m2 some is m60 marlin. shoots ok i should work a little more on its reliability.
for a big gun i use what i call my turksniper. sights removed(because i goofed the end of the barrel) made the bolt handle myself, luepold mount/rings, and a simons scope. it shoots around 1.5" all day long.
for those who think the 8mm is no good i would like to show them this thing. it is way faster than my 308 and thats with a heavyer bullet. you just have to get away from factory loads.

Well, all of my milsurps are sported, not by me though, and I use the following ones to hunt with.

No4Mk1 .303 Maltby "Custom Carbine"
M-1917 Enfield .30-06
M-39 Finn SAKO rework

All are accurate and dependable, I want to scope my 6.5x55mm Swedish sported carbine too.

Sac, you mention shunks. I had one of the pesky varmits here around the house for a while. A couple of times it wouldn't let us out of the house. He had claimed the back porch as his own territory evidently. Well, finally one night he strayed off into the yard a piece, at which point I stuck the barrel of a 12 ga trench gun out he door and blasted him

"DIRECT HIT"! The poor varmit was separated into several parts. I had no idea the scatter gun would do that, that far away!

What I learned that night was, that the "ODOR OIL" when spilled in liquid form, must be a thousand times more potent than the mist, when administered by a live animal.

I ended up having to dig off the top layer of grass and dirt from the yard to get rid of the smell!

First lesson learned, if you must shoot, use a .22 and a head shot.
Second lesson, learned from a friend later while I was digging, take an egg to the county extension office, and tell them about your skunk problem. They can inject a drug into the egg and put a piece of scotch tape over the small hole. Lay the egg out at night, where by the critter will find it. (one of their favorite foods by the way). The shunk will "suck the egg", get deathly sick, and stray off somewhere else to die. However, the dose is not lethal. He will wake up recovering in a couple of days, apparently not remembering where he came from, and go off to bother someone else!

My goal is to hunt with all my milsurps someday, but have only been successful with a T-99 Jap and a mosin38 with a Darrel's Scout mount. Here's a pic of the Mosin:

My current "old reliables" are a Ruger 77 6.5 Swede and a Ruger 77 358 Win.

i like your shotgun way of doing them in!
i dont bother with head shots or anything as long as hes dead i am fine with that. as to the stink i just avoid the area for about a week and the ground neutalizes it. you will get a powerful stink right after you shoot them but in a couple of days you dont smell a thing. like i said i do avoid the area that i shot them at.

Wow! You guys have bagged some nice bucks with your milsurps!

I've been teasing WmRoy about k-31s....maybe I should just be quiet now.....nah!:D

K-31s are good on deer, but M-1's are REAL Battle rifles! :xxrotflmao:

I'll name my hunting weapon choices in the order of most used to least used over the years...

1. Remington 870 12 gauge (Deer, Doves, Squirrels, Rabbits, crows, etc.)
2. Remington 11-87 12 gauge (Deer & Doves)
3. Marlin Model 60 22rf (squirrels)
4. Marlin model 30AS 30-30 (Deer)
5. Winchester M70 Featherweight 270 (Deer)

I no longer have the 30-30...traded it on the Winchester years ago--thus it is my newest hunting weaponm and therefore the least used on the list. I've killed the most game with the shotguns.

Honorable mention: Ruger 77 mkII in 243...I bought this a few years ago when we had some bob-cat problems at my inlaws. Figured I had a good excuse for another rifle. After getting the special permits to shoot the bc's out of season, one of the neighbors up the road shot and killed the predators in question!:BangHead: Loaned the Ruger out on a couple of unsuccessful deer hunts. Sold it a little over a year ago with No kills to its credit. :dontknow:
